The mighty ocean breeds and nourishes magnificent marine civilization, while on the other hand, it swallows up numerous valiant navigators without mercy. Wan Reef I is one of the trade wrecks engulfed by the sea. It can be seen as a time capsule, frozen 300 years ago in the Golden age of Kangxi in China.
Archaeologists salvaged more than 17000 pieces of Jingdezhen porcelain in a variety of shapes and decorations, from the Wan Reef I wreck. These wares embody the peak of Chinese civilian porcelain in the early Qing dynasty and hold high historical, scientific, cultural and artistic value.
The China Maritime Museum and the Fuzhou Museum are proud to present Out to the World: Treasures from Wan Reef I shipwreck, the largest exhibition ever to showcase a considerable number of salvaged relics from the wreckage. 198 pieces or sets of the cargo are on display. Focusing on the shipwrecked treasures, this exhibition examines Chinese porcelain in its historical context, brings to light the exchanges and interaction among different civilizations, thus promoting the culture and spirit of the Maritime Silk Road.
